Steelhead fishing update

Last Monday I drove to the hood river and noticed that the water clarity is good and the water level seems to be fine. The water temperature has been sitting around 40-42 degree F. Since the beginning of February there are have been 72 steelhead trapped at the powedale dam, which means steelhead are holding in the pocket water. 44 of the 72 steelhead have been hatchery fish. I saw a guy land a big steelhead around 10:00 on monday, he was throwing a corky, it was a hatchery steelhead as well. Then on Wendnesday I went out to the hood river again with a good friend, we fished through the morning and mid afternoon but didn't have any hits. There were lots of people and I saw one guy with another hatchery steelhead. So what I'm trying to say is, there are fish coming up the river and the counts are ok. With the weather warming, now might be a good time to head to the hood river.Good luck and cast away.

fishing news

Just a brief update. Weather has warmed up in the last few weeks averaging high 40- 50 degrees which makes it a nice day for fishing. About a week ago I went to the hood river, the water was a little high and just a bit of color, but I think conditions are fine now. I didn't have any luck but talked to a man who had hooked 3 steelhead(throwing spinners). I was bend today and stopped at the The patient fly shop, talked to a guy there and he said they were having luck around the Maupin area for steelhead, swinging big fly's with sink tip line, purple, pink, black are good colors around this time. Leech patterns are a good bet. good luck

2010 Forecast

Hello! fishermen,
I was doing some research and thought I might share some good news that I found on fishing. Biologists for Oregon and Washington have released their forecast for the 2010 upriver Columbia and Snake river spring chinook salmon runs. Biologists have put up a forecast of 470,000 fish, the highest return since Bonneville Dam was built and counts began in 1938. I’m predicting that in early may we will start to see fish moving into some of the rivers located up and down of the Columbia River. If you fly fish take a moment and check out my flies you might find one to be productive.

Lastest fishing report.....

Unfortunately I haven't been able to get out and see how the fishing has been in the last month or so. As you know the weather has been quite cold and fishing for steelhead has calmed down significantly from the record breaking counts this year.
I would still bet there are a few steelhead in some of these rivers, The klickitat, Deschutes River, Hood River. During the month of November I hooked a hatchery steelhead on the hood river and that was the last time I went fishing before things got very cold.
As for the deschutes river I would head up river from Maupin as now the fish are further upstream and you might have some luck. I'm not sure about the klickitat river so you'll just have to go and explore. Hopefully I can get out soon and see what's going on in these rivers.
